MPC – Mars Perennial Calendar

We live at an interesting point in the timeline. China successfully replicated Elon Musk’s self-landing rocket, which led me to ask whether GPC — the Global Perennial Calendar — could work on Mars. This, of course, led to designing a completely new calendar for the Red Planet, which hopefully may spur humans to become an interplanetary species.

Let’s briefly discuss what GPC is so that my train of thought can make sense to the uninitiated.

In the first century, the Qumran cult, which inhabited regions near the Dead Sea, praised their Enochian calendar for its uniformity. It was likened to angels. The year, which began in spring, had 364 days. This meant that each quarter had exactly 91 days and the year always started on a Wednesday. This was shorter than a natural year, so every seven years an extra week was added. Leap Week years were called Sabbaticals, but it still fell short. So every 49 years (7 × 7) another week was added. This kept the calendar in line with the seasons. Every quarter had a month pattern of 30, 30, 31. The 31st day, which quartered the year, always fell on a Tuesday.

Now that we know what GPC is, can it work on Mars? Yes and no. The exact structure is too Earth-centric.

A Mars year (its orbital period around the Sun) is approximately 687 Earth days, or about 1.88 Earth years. A Mars day is 39 minutes longer. To distinguish between Earth days and Mars days, we call Mars days sols. A Mars year is 668 sols. GPC even has an alternative word for day inspired by Hindu tradition. We sometimes call the 24-hour period on Earth a tetrad, so that “day” on Earth and Mars can only refer to the 12-hour period of daylight.

Now may be a good time to briefly discuss the importance of Mars. The time cycle on Mars is nearly identical to Earth, with periods of light and darkness fit for humans. Mars gravity is actually better for human health. The distance to Mars is just out of our reach. It is far but close enough to cause the brightest among us to long to conquer it. I think this may be inevitable. The Chinese are so far ahead of every nation on the planet that if we are honest with ourselves, we will admit that any settlement of Mars will be led by the Chinese. That being said, I think the official Martian government language should be either Hebrew or Hindi. I’ve studied Earth’s languages, and these are the two most logical candidates. We will get back to how human diversity affects the Red Planet.

There are some noticeable drawbacks to Mars. The biggest hurdle is that it doesn’t have an atmosphere. It is believed to be resource-rich and may be producing methane. The pros outweigh the cons.

In order to apply the Dead Sea Scroll logic to Mars, we must find a number close to 668 sols (Martian days) that is divisible by 7. That number is 672. Once we arrive at that number, magic happens. Now we have a year of exactly 24 months, all of 28 days. This is remarkably similar to the Igbo calendar in Nigeria. Just like GPC, we begin the year in spring on a Wednesday when the sun was created — Martian spring, not Earth.

We do have a problem, however. Now our year is 3.5 sols too long. To compensate, we remove 28 sols every 7 years. We do this by removing 1 week from the 6th month of each quarter. Every quarter has exactly 6 months — twice that of Earth’s calendars. But we’re still too long. So every 49 years an extra week is removed from the 24th month so that the last month has 14 days. Thus 35 sols are removed every 49 years. And just like that, the calendar is remarkably accurate, drifting only 1 day every millennium. Welcome to the MPC — The Mars Perennial Calendar.

It’s amazing. This ancient Judean community by the Dead Sea gave us the formula that could manage life on a dead planet. Mars has two moons that orbit nearly daily, making a lunar calendar impossible. A solar calendar is the only option. It’s fascinating. The Qumran cult, which labeled themselves “sons of light” for keeping a solar calendar in a lunar world, hold the keys to the kingdom.

Judaism is mostly Earth-centric. Why is there another planet in our solar system so similar to Earth? Even the metric system, which is geodesic, works surprisingly well on Mars, which has a roughly 20,000 km circumference — about half the size of Earth. Mars has polar ice caps just like Earth. We can deduce that a large body of ice hit both Earth and Mars and was attracted to the poles. Mars was completely destroyed, but Earth survived. The 7th layer of Earth’s atmosphere, known as the rakia (רקיע) in Hebrew — which was a layer of ice — came down, and all of Mars’ atmosphere was destroyed. Jewish historian Josephus, who tried joining the Qumran cult, wrote about this 2,000 years ago. This happened in the year 1656 GPC, and the Descent from Mars happened in 1177 GPC. The Book of Enoch is the only ancient book that describes fallen angels or beings from somewhere outside this planet descending to Earth. They mated with humans, and their offspring became giants. The souls of those now-dead giants are what we refer to as demons. Knowledge of where the Watchers or fallen angels came from was not passed down. Nothing in human history or folklore records anything about life ever existing on the Red Planet. The first successful soft landing on Mars (with data and images returned from the surface) was NASA’s Viking 1 lander on July 20, 1976. Since then, we have learned more about the planet and can now safely regard it as the most likely candidate for the home of the Watchers in the Book of Enoch. The Book of Enoch is the true source book for both GPC and MPC. The rules of the calendar work elegantly for both planets. To me, this is proof that the Creator made two planets meant to share a destiny. Like husband and wife — only tragically one is deceased.

Enough theology. Science confirms that both planets were indeed struck by something. Earth’s wobble is both scientific and mathematical proof that indeed this happened after the birth and death of Krishna around the time of the flood. So here is the good news. Humans have UTC or Zulu time, but only pilots and the military can agree on using it. Mars has no time zones. Establishing a universal time is less challenging there than on Earth. The Darian calendar is one of several proposed calendars. The Chinese have their system, America has several, and everyone has their own ideas on Mars Time Coordinated — MTC. In GPC, the current year is 6023 on Earth and 3202 on Mars, since the year is 1.881 times longer. Because of the efficiency outlined in the Book of Enoch, Jubilees, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, we propose a GPC system for both planets.

Mars has exactly 96 weeks a year, which is a highly composite number. It’s too perfect! 24 hours a day and 24 months in a year! Wow! 24 isn't an arbitrary number.

There are 24 hours in a day because we have 12 lines on each hand. There are 7 days a week because of the 7 vertebrae in the cervical spine. We have 16 teeth in each jaw because we are awake 16 hours.

The Earth is a reflection of our own bodies because we are the dominant species. Mars is the same because it used to be inhabited. On Mars each season has 168 days, which happens to be the time it takes to get there using efficient trajectories like Hohmann transfers.

Here’s a summary:

  • Each season has 6 months of 28 days: 6 × 28 = 168 sols each season
  • Which means 168 × 4 = 672 sols
  • ~686.97 Earth days or 668.59 sols
  • Our system is 3.5 sols too long
  • An entire month is removed every 7 years in order to stay perfectly aligned. We do this by removing a week from the 6th month of each quarter. This way, every sabbatical, 28 sols are removed
  • Every Jubilee, another week is removed. Thus the last month of the year every Jubilee is 2 weeks long.
  • The year starts on a Wednesday, just like in the Global Perennial Calendar
  • The current time at Mars’ prime meridian (defined by the location of the crater Airy-0).
