The Mars Biennial Torah Reading
This post will get kinda technical. For those that are new, this may be a good starting point:
I revived the ancient Triennial system of the land of Israel, and in doing so I have learned that it is a superior system to the annual Babylonian system popular today.
Mars is Earth’s wife. It’s the only other planet in our solar system that has the potential for humans to live there and is within our reach. It has a 24-hour day just like Earth, and its gravity is better for health and longevity. It is also tilted on its axis and has polar ice caps just like Earth. Something from outer space must have struck Earth and Mars simultaneously thousands of years ago, resulting in the newsworthy north and south polar ice caps we hear about so frequently today. The metric system also works perfectly well on Mars since it is almost perfectly half the size.
Thankfully, Mars has two moons that orbit almost daily, which means we don’t have to waste another millennium arguing over a lunar calendar. The solar Qumran calendar of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which has been revived by GPC — the Global Perennial Calendar — works amazingly well on Mars.
According to Jewish religious texts, leap years occur every seven years and have a dual function as periods of rest. These leap years are known as sabbaticals. Thus the Torah reading cycle is Triennial — occurring every 3 and a half years. This means the Torah is read twice every sabbatical cycle. A cycle within a cycle. Everything is clockwork. The Triennial system, known also as the land of Israel system, cannot work on Mars. The reason is simple: a Mars year is twice as long as Earth’s. Thus if we were to adopt the exact same Triennial cycle on Mars, it would result in a weekly Torah reading that averages 15 verses long instead of the usual 32 verses — about half. That’s only 2 verses a day! Not enough depth.
The solution? Make Mars Biennial. Thus the Mars reading cycle is every two years. A year on Mars has 96 weeks. The Biennial system is thus completed every 192 weeks. That’s 10 weeks longer than the 182-week Triennial system on Earth. This way they both average 30–32 verses a week. Notice they are similar and yet opposites. The Triennial system on Earth is completed twice every seven years. The Biennial system on Mars is completed thrice every seven years.
In the Biennial system the Torah is not read at all on sabbaticals. From Earth’s perspective this occurs every 14 years, since Mars has a year that is twice as long.
Well folks, that’s a wrap. By making this, several goals have been accomplished. I made something engaging that can help me improve my Hindi. I revived something ancient. I learned more about the billionaire madman Elon Musk that now seems less crazy. But the most important thing that I get to scratch off my checklist is that I’ve made Judaism the first interplanetary religion 😊.

במערכת הדו-שנתית התורה לא נקראת בכלל בשמיטות. מנקודת המבט של כדור הארץ זה קורה כל 14 שנים, כי שנה על מאדים ארוכה פי שניים.

समाधान? मंगल को द्विवार्षिक बनाओ। इस प्रकार मंगल का पाठ चक्र हर दो साल में है। मंगल पर एक साल में 96 सप्ताह होते हैं। द्विवार्षिक प्रणाली इस प्रकार हर 192 सप्ताह में पूरी होती है। यह पृथ्वी की 182-सप्ताह की त्रैवार्षिक प्रणाली से 10 सप्ताह लंबी है। इस तरह दोनों औसतन 30–32 पद प्रति सप्ताह होते हैं। ध्यान दें कि वे समान हैं और फिर भी विपरीत। पृथ्वी पर त्रैवार्षिक प्रणाली हर सात साल में दो बार पूरी होती है। मंगल पर द्विवार्षिक प्रणाली हर सात साल में तीन बार पूरी होती है।
द्विवार्षिक प्रणाली में सबैटिकल पर तोराह बिल्कुल नहीं पढ़ी जाती। पृथ्वी के दृष्टिकोण से यह हर 14 साल में होता है, क्योंकि मंगल का साल दोगुना लंबा होता है।
