The Triennial System

Reviving the Triennial Cycle
The Global Perennial Calendar has already adapted the 54 Torah portions to the perfect 364-day calendar outlined in the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is a feature in our Lotus app.
The dominant Torah cycle used today has its origins in Babylon. Prior to this, another custom existed known as the Land of Israel Custom:
Tractate Soferim 16:10
Abraham lived 175 years (Genesis 25:7). The tradition linked the number of Torah sections that begin with verbs of divine speech or command to Abraham’s lifespan and then used that number as the basis for the public reading divisions.
Scholars explain the higher figure in a few related ways:
It fits a roughly 3½-year cycle — 175 weeks is approximately 3 years and 4–5 months. This matches the Palestinian practice of completing the Torah in about three-and-a-half years (so that it was read through twice in a seven-year shemittah cycle).
This system has been revived by Machon Shilo, who did a wonderful job reviving ancient Hebrew pronunciation.
Lately I have been attending a Conservative synagogue and have learned that this triennial cycle has also been revived by Reform and Conservative communities. Their system is a strange balance between ancient and modern. Basically, their ultimate goal was to have a shorter weekly Torah portion. To achieve this they read a third of the weekly Torah portion each year, thus completing the cycle every three years while remaining in sync with those following the annual Babylonian system.
GPC takes a different but similar path. For our annual cycle we are in sync with the Babylonian system about 50% of the time. The reason perfect harmony is not possible is that we are using a solar calendar of 52 weeks while they are using a lunar one of approximately 54 weeks. It must also be stated that even the ancient Land of Israel Custom using the triennial system of 175 orders is flawed. It drifts and therefore does not end exactly at the end of a sabbatical year. It was clearly invented at a time nearer to when sabbaticals were observed.
The Mathematical Wonders of the 3½-Year Triennial System
There are 52 weeks in a year. So how many weeks are in 7 years?
52 × 7 = 364
Incredible. There are exactly 364 days in a year in the Dead Sea Scrolls calendar. What a perfect parallel. The Torah portions point to a solar calendar being the actual calendar of the Torah. This means the triennial system should be divided into 182 sections:
364 ÷ 2 = 182 sections (or orders), which equals three-and-a-half years.
There are about 5,846 verses in the Torah (though the Gemara states 5,888). Either way, 5,846 ÷ 182 ≈ 32. Thus every day 4 verses are read, in contrast to the average of 12 verses read daily in the Babylonian system. The mathematically simplest way to divide the Torah is like this:
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 32
- Sunday: 4 verses
- Monday: 4 verses
- Tuesday: 4 verses
- Wednesday: 4 verses
- Thursday: 5 verses
- Friday: 5 verses
- Saturday: 6 verses
The duration of three-and-a-half years is mentioned only twice in the Tanakh (Daniel 7:25 and 12:7) and several times in the Christian New Testament (Luke 4:25; James 5:17; Revelation 11:2–3, 12:6–7, 12:14, 13:5).
Origins in the Torah Itself
The actual origins of the Torah portions are found in the Torah itself:
Deuteronomy 31:10–12
The Torah reading is supposed to be connected to the sabbatical year, like the triennial system, and not separate like the Babylonian system.
The Babylonian Talmud explicitly notes the difference: “The people of the West [Eretz Yisrael] complete the Torah in three years” (Megillah 29b).
The verses in the New Testament that mention the three-and-a-half-year duration indicate influence from the original Torah reading cycle. 1 Kings 18:1 states, “After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, ‘Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.’” Yet Luke 4:25 and James 5:17 give a specific duration of exactly 3.5 years. There is no reason to do that unless it is influenced by the Torah cycle. That is my deductive reasoning.
Why It Matters
Before I begin the painstaking process of reviving the triennial system, we must ask ourselves: Is it even worth the time, money, and energy? Yes. There is a psychological reason. The Babylonian system disconnects you from time. Every year is the same and you are not part of the cycle. This forces you to think more in a Western linear way.
There is a man teaching that Noah’s Ark and Solomon’s Temple were round. If you perceive time in a linear fashion, it will change how you interpret the Torah. Instead of the Temple being a dome, you will start to see it as a cube and Noah’s Ark like a shoebox.
