Archeology

In 2012, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced that archaeologists had discovered a 3,000-year-old inscription on a reconstructed large ceramic jar found in Khirbet Qeiyafa, containing the name "Eshbaal ben Beda". Though this Eshbaal is a different person than the Eshbaal/Ish-bosheth of the Bible, it was the first time the name was discovered in an ancient inscription. It is one of only four Hebrew inscriptions ever discovered dating to the 10th century BC.

💡 Abishalom, another name for Absalom, is the grandfather of Maach, the wife of Rehoboam, and the word “daughter” in 1 Kings 15:2 prob. means “granddaughter,” and “mother” of Asa in 1 Kings 15:10 means “grandmother.”

Benson Commentary

2 Kings 1:17. Jehoram reigned in his stead — Namely, his brother, because he had no son. In the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat — To avoid confusion, the reader should take notice, that in the course of this history, there is mention made of two Jehorams; one the second son of Ahab, who succeeded Ahaziah, and was king of Israel; the other, the heir of Jehoshaphat, who reigned in Judah. By comparing 2 Kings 3:1, and 2 Kings 8:16, it will appear that there is a considerable difference in the reading of the dates, which made Houbigant suppose that some errors have crept into the text. To reconcile, however, the above-mentioned passages, some have supposed that Jehoshaphat, in his seventeenth year, when he went to Ahab, and with him to Ramoth-gilead, appointed his son Jehoram his viceroy, and (in case of his death) his successor. In the second year from that time, when Jehoram was thus made vice-king in his father’s stead and absence, this Jehoram, Ahab’s son, began to reign: and in the fifth year of the reign of this Jehoram, son of Ahab, which was about the twenty- fourth year of Jehoshaphat’s reign, Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, was made king of Judah, together with his father. This supposition, if allowed, will, in a great degree, clear up the difficulty.

💡 Most scholars regard the 42 years in 2 Chronicles 22:2 as a copyist's error for an original 22 years. The age of 22 is also found in some Greek and Syrian versions of 2 Chronicles 22:2.

💡 How old would Ahaz have been when his son, Hezekiah was born? A cursory look at 2 Kings 16:1 and 18:1 suggest he may have only been eleven. (Ahaz was 20 when he became king and he reigned 16 years. So he died aged 36. Hezekiah was 25 when he became king.

💡 Two years before the date that King Jereboam’s kingdom ended (at his death), which is the first year of Asa add Ezekiel’s prophesied 390 and 40 years. 390 for the sins of Israel and 40 years for the sins of Judah. You will see that the total 430 years ends the same year that Jeremiah’s 70-year prophecy ends and the 490 year timeframe ends, from the reign of Solomon to the end of the 70 years of captivity and the second Temple cornerstone.

ERRORS

💡 The dates below are in fact correct. There is simply a copyist error with the name. The scribe wrote Baasha instead of Omri. This makes sense considering Omri was a builder and he is mentioned frequently in Chronicles but some how nothing is mentioned of his acts.

ERRORS

💡 The dates below are in fact correct. There is simply a copyist error with the name. The scribe wrote Baasha instead of Omri. This makes sense considering Omri was a builder and he is mentioned frequently in Chronicles but some how nothing is mentioned of his acts.
